There is currently a population of approx. 250,000 people within 12 miles of the landfill.
Peterborough is one of the fastest-growing cities in the country, and is set to expand with a huge programme of house-building.
From the south, the Milton Keynes South Midlands development plan will see a huge influx of people moving towards and beyond Corby.
The site will be radioactive for 60 years after closure, by which time the local population will be significantly greater.
So is this really the best place for a nuclear waste dump?
The area just to the north of the landfill is designated a site of Special Scientific Interest. There is, or was until Augean moved them, a colony of protected Great-crested Newts.
The area is also home to the successful re-introduction of Red Kites, and large numbers of these birds can be seen flying, and feeding, near the landfill.
How well such species will stand up to radiation is anyone's guess.
